About Valheim: A Viking-inspired survival sandbox for up to 10 players
Valheim drops you into a procedurally generated tenth realm where you build longhouses, sail to new biomes, and fight increasingly tough bosses with up to 10 friends. The appeal is its pace: slow, deliberate, and deeply rewarding. The game is at its best on a server that's always on, so your world keeps progressing whether you're online or not.
Steam, Xbox, PS5 and Switch 2 crossplay on a single world
Host Havoc Valheim servers run with full Steam, Xbox, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2 crossplay enabled. PC players join using the IP and port shown in your control panel; console players join with a code from the same panel. No separate worlds per platform. One server, one save file, every platform.
BepInEx and ValheimPlus, one-click installs
The Valheim modding community runs on BepInEx, and Host Havoc supports it natively from the control panel. Install ValheimPlus, Epic Loot, Better Continents, or any Thunderstore mod with a single click. No command-line work, no manual file uploads. Server-side world modifiers (combat difficulty, raid frequency, resource rate) are configurable from the same panel, with changes taking effect on the next world load.
NVMe storage, DDoS protection, 24/7 support
Valheim's world generation hammers disk I/O, especially on large saves. Every Host Havoc Valheim server runs on NVMe SSD storage with DDoS protection enabled by default. Datacenter locations span North America, Europe, Australia, and South America. Pick the region closest to your group for the lowest ping. Our support team averages under 10 minutes to first response, every day of the year.
How to Set Up a Valheim Dedicated Server
With Host Havoc
The easy way: with Host Havoc
- Pick your region. Servers sized for Valheim's full 10-player cap, in the datacenter closest to your group.
- Deploy in minutes. Your server launches on the latest build, crossplay ready.
- Manage from the panel. Set the world name, password, and crossplay in a few clicks. No launch scripts to edit.
Automated world backups, DDoS protection, and 24/7 support are included.
Without Host Havoc
The manual way: self-hosting
Valheim's official dedicated server is a native headless tool for Windows and Linux. The world lives in RAM, so plan for 4 fast cores and 4 to 8 GB that grows as players explore. No GPU needed.
- Download the server with SteamCMD using the anonymous login and the dedicated server Steam App ID
896660:steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 896660 validate +quit - Edit the launch script. There is no config file: set
-name,-world,-password, and-portinstart_server.batorstart_server.sh. Add-crossplayfor console players. - On Linux, install the extras. Crossplay needs
libpulse-dev,libatomic1, andlibc6first. - Forward UDP
2456-2457on your router and firewall (game port plus query port). - Keep it running as a service on Windows, or in screen/tmux on Linux, and always shut down with Ctrl+C: killing the process loses unsaved world progress.
After that it is on you: updating the server on every patch (clients cannot join on a version mismatch), backing up the whole world folder (1.0 splits saves into .fwl2, .db2, and chunk files), crash restarts, and absorbing DDoS yourself.
