About Eco: Build a civilization together and stop the meteor
Eco is a multiplayer civilization game from Strange Loop Games, in Early Access on Steam since 2018. Every player starts with basic tools on a world with a fully simulated ecosystem, and the group has to specialize in professions, trade through a player-run economy, and pass laws to stop an incoming meteor without wiping out the plants and animals around them. Pollution, overhunting, and clear-cutting all have lasting consequences. Because crafting queues, plant growth, and the meteor countdown keep running between sessions, Eco works best on a dedicated server that stays online 24/7.
Mods from mod.io, delivered to players on join
Eco supports server-side mods built with the official ModKit, and most are published on mod.io. Upload them to the server's Mods folder over FTP and restart. Players receive the required mod files automatically when they connect, with nothing to install by hand.
World, difficulty, and access settings
World size and terrain are set in WorldGenerator.eco, skill and XP rates in Difficulty.eco, and the server name, password, and public listing in Network.eco. Admins and whitelists use SLG IDs or Steam64 IDs. Every Host Havoc Eco server includes DDoS protection, automated backups, and 24/7 support.
How to Set Up an Eco Dedicated Server
With Host Havoc
The easy way: with Host Havoc
- Pick a plan and region. 1 to 8 slots, in the datacenter closest to your group.
- Deploy in minutes. Your server launches on the latest Eco build, ready to join.
- Manage from the panel. Set the server name and password in a few clicks. No
Network.ecoediting.
Automated world backups, DDoS protection, and 24/7 support are included.
Without Host Havoc
The manual way: self-hosting
Eco's official dedicated server from Strange Loop Games runs natively on Windows and Linux. It leans on one fast CPU core rather than many, and needs at least 4 GB of RAM for a small world, more for bigger maps and busy servers. No GPU needed.
- Install the prerequisites. The Visual C++ redistributables on Windows, or libraries such as
libgdipluson Linux. - Download the server with SteamCMD using the anonymous login and Steam App ID
739590:steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 739590 validate +quit - Generate a server token under Server Authentication on your play.eco account. Eco 11 and newer servers will not start without it.
- Edit
Configs/Network.eco. SetName,Password,PublicServer, and the ports. Add admins by SLG ID or Steam64 ID inConfigs/Users.eco. - Forward UDP
3000(game) and TCP3001(web interface) on your router and firewall. - Keep it running as a service on Windows, or in screen/tmux on Linux.
After that it is on you: patching on every Strange Loop Games update (major Early Access updates can require a fresh world), scheduling world backups, restarting after crashes, and absorbing DDoS yourself.
