About Rust: survival, base building, and raids on a monthly wipe cycle
Rust is a multiplayer survival game from Facepunch Studios. You spawn with a rock and a torch, gather wood, stone, and metal, craft weapons and tools, and build a base that other players can raid while you are offline. A dedicated server gives your group its own map with your own rules and player limit, and keeps it online 24/7 so the world keeps running between sessions. Host Havoc Rust plans range from 30 to 400 slots, so the same setup works for a small group or a full community server.
Vanilla or modded with Oxide/uMod
Run a pure vanilla server, or add Oxide/uMod plugins for teleports, kits, custom loot tables, and admin tools. Plugins are managed from the control panel, and FTP access is available for plugin configs and data files.
Map settings, admins, and the monthly wipe
Set the server name, world size, map seed, and max players from the control panel, then make yourself admin with the ownerid console command and your Steam64 ID. Facepunch ships a forced update on the first Thursday of every month, and every server has to update and start a fresh map when it lands. Plan your wipe schedule around that date, and update Oxide/uMod together with the server.
How to Set Up a Rust Dedicated Server
With Host Havoc
The easy way: with Host Havoc
- Pick a plan and region. 30 to 400 slots, in the datacenter closest to your players.
- Deploy in minutes. Your server launches on the current Rust build, ready to join.
- Manage from the panel. Set the server name and player cap, and install Oxide/uMod plugins without touching launch parameters.
Automated backups, DDoS protection, and 24/7 support are included.
Without Host Havoc
The manual way: self-hosting
Rust's dedicated server runs natively on Windows and Linux, and it is limited by single-thread CPU speed more than core count. Facepunch's baseline is 12 GB of free RAM, and a busy map with 50 to 100 players realistically needs 12 to 16 GB, more once you add plugins. No GPU needed.
- Download the server with SteamCMD using the anonymous login and Steam App ID
258550:steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 258550 validate +quit - Build your launch command. Rust is configured mostly with launch parameters:
+server.hostname,+server.maxplayers,+server.worldsize,+server.seed,+server.identity, and+rcon.password. Persistent settings go inserver/<identity>/cfg/server.cfg. - Forward the ports. UDP
28015(game), UDP28017(query, or the server won't show in the browser), and TCP28082for the Rust+ companion app. Keep RCON on TCP28016closed unless you need remote admin. - Add Oxide/uMod or Carbon if you want plugins, and reinstall it after every server update, because the update overwrites it.
- Keep it running as a service on Windows, or in screen/tmux on Linux with
LD_LIBRARY_PATHpointed at the server's plugin libraries.
After that it is on you: updating and wiping on Facepunch's forced monthly update (the first Thursday of every month), backing up the server identity folder, restarting after crashes, and absorbing DDoS yourself.
