How to Fix an ARK Server That Keeps Crashing

Published June 8, 2026 · By Host Havoc Technical Support Team

An ARK: Survival Evolved server crash is usually not a full application crash, which our panel would auto-restart, but an engine hang: the server goes unresponsive, players cannot connect, and CPU usage drops to 0% with no recovery. The cause is nearly always mods or the modded saved data they leave behind.

Before you start: If the panel keeps auto-restarting the service, that is a full crash, not the hang covered here. See server won't start for that case.

Why it hangs

  1. Mods and modded saved data, which most often break right after a game update.
  2. Corrupt saved data, which is almost always a side effect of mods.

How to fix it

  1. Remove problem mods. You rarely need to remove all of them, but drop any that are not actively maintained, since ARK's frequent updates break stale mods.
  2. Reset your saved data after any mod change, so leftover modded data cannot conflict.

Tip: Keep your mod list small and stick to actively updated mods. It is the best way to avoid update-day crashes. If CPU stays at 0% with no mods involved, see CPU stuck at 0%.
