How to Fix an ARK Server That Keeps Crashing
An ARK: Survival Evolved server crash is usually not a full application crash, which our panel would auto-restart, but an engine hang: the server goes unresponsive, players cannot connect, and CPU usage drops to 0% with no recovery. The cause is nearly always mods or the modded saved data they leave behind.
Before you start: If the panel keeps auto-restarting the service, that is a full crash, not the hang covered here. See server won't start for that case.
Why it hangs
- Mods and modded saved data, which most often break right after a game update.
- Corrupt saved data, which is almost always a side effect of mods.
How to fix it
- Remove problem mods. You rarely need to remove all of them, but drop any that are not actively maintained, since ARK's frequent updates break stale mods.
- Reset your saved data after any mod change, so leftover modded data cannot conflict.
Tip: Keep your mod list small and stick to actively updated mods. It is the best way to avoid update-day crashes. If CPU stays at 0% with no mods involved, see CPU stuck at 0%.
