How to Set a Password on Your Enshrouded Server

Updated September 1, 2026 · By Host Havoc Technical Support Team

Adding a password to your Enshrouded server restricts access so only players who know the password can join. Enshrouded handles passwords through user groups: the password a player enters when joining decides which group they are in and what they are allowed to do. You set these passwords in the Game Panel's Config Editor.

For other server settings in the same file, see our guide on changing the server name.

Set the server password

  1. Log in to the Game Control Panel and navigate to your Enshrouded server.
  2. Stop your server if it is running.
  3. Click Configuration Files in the panel.
  4. Open enshrouded_server.json using the Config Editor.
  5. Enter your passwords:
    • Default User/Server Password – the password you share with your players. They join with regular player permissions.
    • Admin Group Password – your own password for full admin rights, such as kicking and banning players. See our guide on becoming an admin.

Use a different password for each field, and never share the Admin Group Password with regular players.
  6. Click Save & Exit.
  7. Start your server.

Players will now be prompted to enter a password when they join the server, and the password they enter decides their permissions. To remove the password for regular players, clear the Default User/Server Password field and save again.

Adding more roles

The Config Editor covers the default player group and the admin group. If you want more roles, for example a group that can build but not kick players, edit the userGroups section with the Text Editor instead. See our guide to user groups for all the options.

Troubleshooting

If the password does not take effect, confirm the server was fully stopped before editing the file and that the file was saved before restarting. If a player joins with the wrong permissions, check which password they entered and make sure the two passwords are different.
