About The Forest: Endnight's co-op survival horror
The Forest is Endnight Games' survival horror game, fully released on Steam in 2018 after four years in Early Access. After a plane crash on a forested peninsula, you search for your missing son, build shelters and defenses, and hold off cannibal tribes and the mutants in the cave system below. Co-op hosted from the game menu only runs while the host is playing. A dedicated server keeps the world online, so anyone in your group can drop in to build or explore when they have time.
Server settings you control
The dedicated server reads its options from Server.cfg: server name, player and admin passwords, difficulty (Peaceful, Normal, or Hard), save slot, autosave interval, and switches such as vegan mode, tree regrowth, and building destruction. Admins join with the admin password and run the server with chat commands like /kick, /ban, and /save.
Saves, backups, and joining
The server keeps five save slots and autosaves every 15 minutes by default. Host Havoc adds offsite backups, so a griefed base or a bad restart can be rolled back. Steam players join through the in-game Dedicated (Internet) browser or by adding your server's IP and query port to their Steam favorites. Dedicated servers are PC only, so the PS4 version cannot connect.
How to Set Up a The Forest Dedicated Server
With Host Havoc
The easy way: with Host Havoc
- Pick a plan and region. 20 to 100 slots, in the datacenter closest to your group.
- Deploy in minutes. Your server launches on the latest build, ready to join.
- Manage from the panel. Set the server name and passwords in a few clicks. No
Server.cfgediting.
Automated backups, DDoS protection, and 24/7 support are included.
Without Host Havoc
The manual way: self-hosting
Endnight's official The Forest Dedicated Server is a Windows-only tool (Linux hosts need Wine). It is light by modern standards: plan for 2 to 4 cores and 4 GB of RAM for a small group, with more RAM as bases grow. No GPU needed.
- Download the server with SteamCMD using the anonymous login and Steam App ID
556450:steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 556450 validate +quit - Run
TheForestDedicatedServer.exeonce. It writes a defaultServer.cfgtoAppData\LocalLow\SKS\TheForestDedicatedServer\ds. - Edit
Server.cfg. SetserverIPto the machine's LAN address, plusserverName, serverPlayers, serverPassword, andserverPasswordAdmin. Add a Steam login token (created for App ID242760) inserverSteamAccountso saves persist. - Forward
8766,27015, and27016(UDP and TCP) on your router and firewall. - Keep it running as a service on Windows, or under Wine in screen/tmux on Linux.
After that it is on you: patching on every server update, backing up save slots, restarting after crashes, and absorbing DDoS yourself.
