About S&box: Facepunch's Source 2 creation platform

S&box is a platform for making and playing games from Facepunch Studios, the team behind Garry's Mod and Rust. It runs on Valve's Source 2 engine, with gameplay written in C# instead of the Lua used in Garry's Mod. Players load gamemodes and maps published on sbox.game, and creators build their own projects in the S&box editor. S&box released on Steam on April 28, 2026, and gained a native Linux client in September 2026. A dedicated server keeps your chosen gamemode online around the clock, so your community does not depend on one player hosting from home.

Facepunch's Sandbox or a community gamemode

The S&box dedicated server picks its gamemode and map by package identifier and downloads them from sbox.game at startup, for example facepunch.sandbox on the facepunch.flatgrass map. Changing gamemode means changing one identifier, and the player limit comes from the gamemode you load.

Updates, backups, and protection

The server ships through SteamCMD as its own Steam app (App ID 1892930), separate from the S&box client, so it can be updated to match each new client build. Every Host Havoc S&box server includes FTP access, automated backups, DDoS protection, and 24/7 support.
