Connect to Your Windows VPS via Remote Desktop

Remote Desktop lets you control your Windows VPS from any PC or Mac. Once connected, your VPS behaves like a standard Windows desktop.

If you plan to install game servers after connecting, see Install SteamCMD on Your Windows VPS for the next step.

Before you start: Have your VPS IP address and the Administrator password from your welcome email ready.

Connect from a Windows PC

  1. Open the Remote Desktop Connection application (search Remote Desktop Connection in the Start menu).
  2. Enter your VPS IP address in the Computer field and click Connect.
  3. Click More choices, then Use a different account.
  4. Enter Administrator as the username and the password from your welcome email.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click Yes on the security certificate prompt.

You are now logged in to your VPS.

Connect from a Mac

  1. Download the Microsoft Remote Desktop app from the Mac App Store.
  2. Add a new PC and enter your VPS IP address.
  3. Set the username to Administrator and enter your password.
  4. Connect and accept any certificate prompt.

Your VPS will operate the same as any Windows PC from this point forward.

Troubleshooting

  • Cannot connect after a Windows update: Windows updates require a reboot. After the reboot the VPS takes a few minutes to become available. Wait and retry. See Update Your Windows VPS for guidance on update timing.
  • Wrong password: Use the credentials from your original welcome email. Passwords are case-sensitive.
