About Unturned: free-to-play zombie survival on Steam
Unturned is a free-to-play survival sandbox from Smartly Dressed Games. You scavenge for food and weapons, fight off zombies, build bases, and decide whether other survivors are allies or targets. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux through Steam, so everyone in your group can join without buying anything. Official maps, curated maps, and Steam Workshop mods
Run one of the official maps such as PEI, Washington, Russia, Yukon, or Germany, or switch to a curated or community map from the Steam Workshop. The server downloads the Workshop content you list on startup, and players receive the same files automatically when they join. For server-side plugins, Unturned works with Rocket (Legally Distinct Missile) and OpenMod.

The manual way: self-hosting
The official Unturned Dedicated Server (U3DS) from Smartly Dressed Games runs natively on Windows or Linux (no macOS) and needs a machine that stays on 24/7. Plan for a fast quad-core CPU and 4 to 8 GB of RAM, more for large maps or heavy mods. No GPU needed.
- Download the server with SteamCMD using the anonymous login and Steam App ID

After that it is on you: patching on every Unturned update, running Save before shutdowns and backing up the Servers folder, restarting after crashes, and absorbing DDoS yourself.
