About Garry's Mod: the Source engine physics sandbox
Garry's Mod is a physics sandbox from Facepunch Studios, built on Valve's Source engine and released on Steam in 2006. Players spawn props, weld contraptions together and pose ragdolls, but most servers run a gamemode on top: DarkRP, Trouble in Terrorist Town (TTT), Prop Hunt, Murder or plain Sandbox. Gamemodes and addons are written in Lua, so every community server plays a little differently. A dedicated server keeps your gamemode, map, addons and saved data online around the clock, without relying on one player's PC staying on.
Steam Workshop collections and Lua addons
Garry's Mod servers load addons from a Steam Workshop collection. Point the server at a public or unlisted collection and it downloads that content at startup, picking up addon updates on every restart. On Host Havoc you set the gamemode, startup map and Workshop collection in the control panel, so there is no launch line to edit. Custom Lua addons, maps and config files go in through the file manager or FTP.
20 to 100 slots, backups and DDoS protection
The Source Dedicated Server runs its main simulation on a single thread, so clock speed matters more than core count, especially on DarkRP servers with large addon stacks. Choose from 20 to 100 slots in the datacenter region closest to your players. Every server includes DDoS protection, automated backups and 24/7 support.
How to Set Up a Garry's Mod Dedicated Server
With Host Havoc
The easy way: with Host Havoc
- Pick a slot count and region. 20 to 100 slots, in the datacenter closest to your players.
- Deploy in minutes. Your server installs on the latest build, ready to join.
- Set it up from the panel. Choose your gamemode, map, and Workshop collection in the control panel. No launch-line editing.
DDoS protection, automated backups, and 24/7 support are included.
Without Host Havoc
The manual way: self-hosting
Garry's Mod runs on Valve's Source Dedicated Server (srcds), native on Windows and Linux. Its main simulation runs on a single thread, so clock speed matters more than core count: plan for 2 fast cores, 2 to 4 GB of RAM for light gamemodes like TTT, and 4 to 8 GB for DarkRP with heavy addon stacks. No GPU needed.
- Create a Game Server Login Token on Steam for App ID
4000(the base game). - Download the server with SteamCMD using the anonymous login and Steam App ID
4020:steamcmd +force_install_dir ./gmodds +login anonymous +app_update 4020 validate +quit - Edit
garrysmod/cfg/server.cfg. Sethostname,sv_password, andrcon_password. Gamemode, map, and player cap go on the launch line:+gamemode,+map,+maxplayers, plus+host_workshop_collectionfor addons and+sv_setsteamaccountfor your token. - Forward
27015on UDP and TCP so players and RCON can reach the server. - Keep
srcdsrunning as a service on Windows, or in screen/tmux on Linux (64-bit Linux needs 32-bit libraries installed first).
After that it is on you: re-running SteamCMD after every update, chasing Lua errors from broken addons, backing up your data, restarting after crashes, and absorbing DDoS yourself.
