Minecraft 1.21 Update - What's New?

by Taylor G.

The Minecraft 1.21 update, known as the "Tricky Trials" update, is officially here as of June 13th, 2024! The update is loaded with new mobs, blocks and weapons. We've covered all the information you must know about this update. Continue reading to stay informed!

Trial Chambers

The Tricky Trials update adds Trial Chambers, new structures where players can explore and face combat challenges.

The Trial Chambers randomly generate and include Traps, Combat Spaces, loot, and rewards. Players must be careful not to step on traps such as Arrows or Fire Charges accidentally.

Around the Trial Chambers, you’ll see Decorated Pots, which can be smashed for loot, and supply chests between rooms, which will give players blocks and items to help them with their exploration.

Vaults and Ominous Vaults are guarded behind combat challenges and require a Trial Key or Ominous Trial Key, depending on the type of vault to be opened. These vaults contain many consumables, equipment and high-level enchantment books.

Each chamber will include trial spawners in 3 categories: Melee, Small Melee or Ranged.

The following enemies can spawn in the Trial Chambers:

  • Breeze
  • Zombie
  • Husk
  • Spider
  • Silverfish
  • Baby Zombie
  • Slime
  • Cave Spider
  • Stray
  • Skeleton
  • Bogged

New Mobs

The Tricky Trials update introduces two new mobs to the game's line-up, which are modified versions of common mobs already in the game.

Bogged

The update introduces a mob known as the Bogged — a variation of the Skeleton mob, covered in moss and mushrooms. Not only does the Bogged shoot arrows like Skeletons, but these arrows are Poison arrows.

The Bogged can spawn in the Swamp and Mangrove Swamp biomes and the new Trial Spawners and Ominous Trial Spawners. Killing Bogged enemy drops Bones and Arrows and has a chance to drop Poison Arrows upon death.

Breeze

The other mob coming in the new update is the Breeze. This mob is an evolution of the Blaze mob. Instead of shooting fire, they shoot wind charges.

Wind Charges can hurt you and knock you back. Breeze’s only spawn in Trial Spawners and Ominous Trial Spawners. If you kill a Breeze, it will drop Breeze Rods.

Breeze Rods can be used to create Flow Armor Trim Smithing Templates. They can also be used to make Mace and Wind Charges. These charges can be thrown by players or dispensers.

New Weapons

Mace

This update introduces a new melee weapon, the Mace. Although it is one of the slowest attacking weapons in the game, it can deal immense damage when used from a height.

This can be crafted from a Breeze Rod and Heavy Core in Trial Chambers.

Maces can be used at height to perform a smashing attack that increases damage based on the number of blocks you’re falling from.

Maces have three unique enchantments that can be used on them.

  • Wind Burst Enchantment: This allows a powerful upward knockback effect after a player executes a smash attack.
  • Density Enchantment: Allows the player to deal extra damage using the mace (Adds +0.5 hearts per enchantment level)
  • Breach Enchantment: Reduces the effectiveness of armour when attacking entities. This affects both wearable armour and natural armour, which some entities have. (Reduces -15% armour effectiveness per enchantment level).

New Potions

  • Infested: An infested mob has a 10% chance to spawn 1-2 silverfish when hurt.
  • Wind Charged: A mob or Player affected by Wind Charged will create a wind burst effect upon death.
  • Oozing: An Oozing mob will spawn two Slimes upon death.
  • Weaving: A Weaved mob will spawn 2-3 cobwebs upon death and move through cobwebs quickly.

New Blocks

This update adds plenty of new blocks and twenty new paintings to the game. They have also added new block variants!

  • The Crafter: A new block that automatically uses Redstone to craft 3x3 recipes. Players can use Hoppers and Droppers to feed the block to use it.
  • Copper: A new resource players can use to craft Bulbs, Doors, Trapdoors, and Grates!
  • Tuff: can be crafted into Walls, Polished Versions, Stairs, Slabs and Bricks!
